AgriTech describes the application of engineering, biology, data science and materials technology to the production of food, feed, fibre and agricultural feedstocks. The field extends across the whole of the agricultural value chain, encompassing the genetics of the seed and the microbiology of the soil as much as the machinery that works the field, the software that directs it, and the processes through which agricultural output is converted into finished food. The sector has undergone a substantial repricing since 2022. Capital committed during the preceding three years was allocated on the expectation that agricultural technology businesses would exhibit the margins and growth rates characteristic of enterprise software, an expectation that proved unfounded. Vertical farms, indoor greenhouse operators and cultivated protein developers are capital-intensive manufacturing businesses selling into commodity markets, and as the cost of capital rose the distance between that reality and the valuations placed upon it became apparent. A significant number of prominent ventures subsequently entered insolvency proceedings, restructured their operations, or withdrew from their principal markets.

The industry that has emerged from this period is smaller and considerably more disciplined. Companies continuing to attract investment tend to share a common set of attributes, namely a saving or yield improvement that can be quantified at the farm gate, a customer possessing both the incentive and the balance sheet to pay for it, a regulatory pathway permitting commercial deployment, and a cost structure capable of reaching positive gross margin within the life of a single funding round. These criteria, rather than the novelty of the underlying technology, increasingly determine which parts of the market expand.

Demand is shaped by three enduring forces. The first is the cost and availability of inputs, where nitrogen price volatility, the progressive withdrawal of conventional crop protection active ingredients and persistent labour scarcity in horticulture have each generated substitution demand that technology is well positioned to satisfy. The second is regulation, which in agriculture operates as a driver of demand rather than merely as a constraint upon it, since reduction targets, supply chain due diligence obligations and reform of the rules governing gene editing have each created markets that did not previously exist. The third is climatic volatility, which narrows the tolerance for agronomic error and correspondingly raises the value of any technology improving the predictability of yield.

Growth is distributed unevenly. The established input and genetics markets expand steadily from a large base, while controlled environment agriculture and advanced food technologies grow more rapidly yet carry a materially greater degree of forecast risk, the determining question in those categories being whether cost parity is achievable at all rather than how competitive position will be divided. This report is a complete commercial assessment of agricultural and food production technology through to 2037. It covers seven addressable segments - vertical farming and controlled environment agriculture, crop biotechnology, smart farming and agricultural robotics, biostimulants and biopesticides, natural fertilizers, livestock biotechnology, and advanced food technologies - together with agrivoltaics and agricultural carbon capture.

It is written for investors, corporate strategists, input and equipment manufacturers, food companies and policymakers who need an accurate picture rather than a promotional one.
